This is a common anatomical abnormality seen in patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis.
Predisposing causes
.Undiagnosed rickets in infancy and childhood. .Blount's disease - a condition in which the medial growth plate of the upper end of the tibia fuses prematurely. .Hereditary.
Risks-
This predisposes the individual to early medial compartment osteoarthritis which can be compounded by obesity and aging.
Diagnosis
Standing full length films are taken by the Orthopedic surgeon to assess the mechanical and anatomical axis of both lower limbs.
Treatment
A high tibial osteotomy is necessary to prevent osteoarthritis. This can be a closed wedge on the lateral side or can also be achieved by an open wedge on the medial side. The open wedge can be filled by a bone substitute or hemicallotasis can be used to generate new bone. If hemicallotasis is done then an exterenal fixator may be used till consolidation takes place. In infancy and childhood a hemicallotsis can achieve more growth on the medial side.
