Do you suffer from a Posterior cruciate ligament injury (PCL injury India) ? Read on…..

Anatomy

book-a-consultationA ligament is a tissue, which connects two bones. In the knee there are four ligaments, the anterior cruciate, the posterior cruciate, the medial collateral and the lateral collateral. The posterior cruciate ligament arises from the top of the tibia and is inserted to the inner aside of the lower end of the femur at the front. It prevents the thigh bone from sliding forwards on the leg bone or it prevents the leg bone from sliding too backwards on the thigh bone. An injury to the posterior cruciate ligament is the rarest of all ligament injuries in the knee. The ligament may tear in the midsubstance or at its tibial or femoral bony attachments

Mechanism of injury
A car accident in which the knee is banged against the dash board, A fall from a height after a knee dislocation

Risks
Contact sports like rugby, football, ice hockey, Kabaddi in which there is the risk of a blow to the front of the knee or twisting injury.

Symptoms
An injury to be posterior cruciate ligament is not easily picked up as the clinical signs are very subtle. There may not be much pain and swelling. There may be some degree of instability.

Treatment
Immediate action consists of rest, ice, compression and elevation. Crutches may be required if the knee is very unstable. An MRI scan may be required to confirm the diagnosis of a tear of the posterior cruciate ligament. Depending upon the level of activity and age of the patient an orthopaedic surgeon may opt for either conservative or surgical treatment.PCL injuries are rarely seen by the orthopaedic surgeon in contrast to ACL injuries. The symptomatic person may need a PCL reconstruction with a patellar tendon bone block.

Prevention
Building up of the hamstring, calf muscles and quadriceps muscles may lessen the chances of a PCL injury. Avoidance of contact sports may lessen the chances of a PCL injury.
