| The menisci help in load transmission and menisectomy decreases their ability to transfer loads. Menisectomy should be conservative enough and yet relieve the mechanical obstruction.
The medial meniscus is more susceptible to injuries in sports men and athletes. Sports persons playing soccer, American football, rugby, are more likely to sustain meniscal injuries. Degenerative tears of the menisci do occur in the elderly but meniscectomy should be limited to unstable tears causing mechanical obstruction. Menisectomy is also indicated for a discoid lateral meniscus in children.
Young individuals who have been forced to undergo a total menisectomy can now avail allograft meniscal transplant. This should postpone secondary osteoarthritis.
